When a website builder is enough
If you need a basic online presence, enjoy doing it yourself, and don’t need the site to connect to anything else, a builder can work well. You pick a template, add your text and photos, and pay a monthly subscription.
The trade-off is your time. You’re the designer, writer, and tech support, and any changes are yours to make.
Where builders fall short
Templates can be slow and heavy, especially on phones. Many businesses end up looking alike. And builders rarely help run the business itself — capturing leads properly, texting back missed calls, showing live availability, or sending form submissions into the software you already use.
What a custom website adds
A custom site is built from scratch around your business: your brand, your services, your service area, and how your customers actually decide. It can be lean and fast, structured clearly for search engines, and connected to the tools behind it — your phone line, calendar, invoicing, or inventory.
With a managed care plan, you also don’t have to touch the tech. Hosting, security, updates, and small changes are handled for you.
How to decide
Ask two questions. Does the website need to do work for the business — bring in and route leads, show availability, take requests? And do you want to manage it yourself? If the answers are “yes” and “no,” a custom site is usually the better fit.
